Choosing a material
Most Singapore decking is sold as WPC or timber. Here is an honest side by side, including where aluminium is the weaker choice, so you can decide before anyone quotes you.
| Consideration | Aluminium | WPC composite | Hardwood timber |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rot, warp and cracking | Does not rot, warp or crack. | Resists rot. Can expand and sag between joists in heat. | Can rot, warp and crack over time. |
| Termites | Not a food source. | Not a food source, though timber flour content varies by brand. | Vulnerable unless treated and maintained. |
| Maintenance | Rinse and wipe. No sealing or oiling. | Occasional wash. No oiling. | Sanding, oiling or staining on a regular cycle. |
| Surface heat in direct sun | Can feel hot barefoot at midday. Textured finishes and lighter colours reduce it. | Also heats up. Dark boards get hottest. | Stays coolest underfoot. |
| Weight on the structure | Lightest of the three. Helps where balcony or rooftop loading is capped. | Heavier than aluminium. | Heaviest, especially dense hardwoods. |
| Behaviour in fire | Aluminium itself does not burn. | Contains plastic and will burn. | Burns. |
| Look and feel | Timber look finishes. Reads as metal up close. | Close to timber at a glance. | Real grain and warmth. |
| Service life | Alu-R Pro states decades with proper installation. | Brand dependent. Typically a warranty in the 10 to 25 year range. | Depends entirely on the maintenance cycle. |
Comparison is based on general material behaviour, not a lab test of specific brands. Figures for any particular system should be confirmed against its datasheet. If your MCST, managing agent or QP asks for a fire classification, ask us for the test report covering the exact system being installed.
Inside the board
The board is an extruded aluminium profile with internal ribs. That is what keeps the weight down while carrying load, and it is why the same system works on a rooftop terrace where a timber deck would be too heavy.
